1. Topic-
Manage all aspects of the case providing comprehensive care for all calculus and perio types - 4-hour clinical session
 
2. Content-
Implement services with feedback from instructor; perform primary assessment, prepare a care plan, communicate the plan of care, remove hard and soft deposits from the teeth; obtain checks from dentist and instructor
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Upon completion of this course, students will be able to assess data on all aspects of patient/client health using methods consistent with dental hygiene scope of practice and legal principles.
2.Upon completion of this course, students will be able to provide preventative and therapeutic services that promote oral health according to the needs of the patient/client.
3.Upon completion of this course, students will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented clinical and educational services and modify if needed.
4.Upon completion of this course, students will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented client/patient dental hygiene care plan and modify as needed.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Upon completion of this clinical session, students will be able to gain experience in managing all aspects of the case in the course of providing comprehensive care for calculus case type 0, 1, 2, or 3 patients at a 79% competency level.
2.Upon completion of this clinical session, students will gain experience in managing all aspects of the case in the course of providing comprehensive care for perio case types 0, I, II, or III patients at a 79% competency level.
3.Upon completion of this clinical session, the student will gain experience in communicating findings to the dentist and maximizing clinical efficiency in a competent manner.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Introduce student teacher and explain how I will be assisting in the learning experience this clinical session (3 min.)
 

B. Development-

1. Obtain medical history check by dentist (5 min.)
2. Complete initial assessment of patient using patient chart, treatment plan worksheet, care plan, treatment progress notes, chart audit form, and Tal Eval (30 min.)
3. Obtain check by instructor after initial assessment (15 min.)
4. Continue with patient care; take x-rays as prescribed by dentist (10 min.)
5. Obtain dentist exam and chart caries as diagnosed by dentist (20 min.)
5. Complete prophylaxis or periodontal therapy by quadrant (60 min.)
6. Obtain quad or arch scale check by instructor (10 min.)
7. Continue with scaling as necessary with remaining time for clinic session (30 min.)
8. Obtain dismissal check by instructor (5 min.)
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will implement care of patient and sign up for instructor or dentist checks as necessary.
2. Student will request feedback from instructor as necessary.
3. Instructor will give constructive criticism as necessary.
4. Instructor will give demonstrations as necessary to aid in clinical skills.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will make decisions that aid in problem solving to determine appropriate care for the patient.
2. Students will complete process assessments as necessary to demonstrate competence in specific instruments.
3. Students will complete process assessments in a nutritional counseling or periodontal therapy demonstration as necessary to demonstrate competence in these areas.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Students that finish early will help other students with operatory cleanup or assisting in clinical care (suctioning)
2. Students who do not have a patient will help other students with charting or assisting duties as needed
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Invite students to reflect on what they learned during this clinical session.
2. Invite students to participate in a think-pair-share session with a fellow classmate to enhance learning and understanding.
 

G. Closure-

1. After all students have completed procedures, they will have patient complete survey. (5 min.)
2. After all students have completed procedures, they will sign up for dismissal check from instructor. (5 min.)
 
7. Evaluation-
Students will be asked to complete evaluation of student teacher (5 min.)
