2. Students will know how to react when hearing a smoke detector
3. Students will recognize the importance of checking the batteries in a smoke alarm.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will identify the purpose of smoke alarms
2. Students will know how to keep smoke alarms working properly
3. Students will know where smoke alarms should be installed
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Smoke alarm, batteries, quiz
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Ask students if they know what smoke alarms are.
2. Ask students why we should have smoke alarms in our houses?
3. Ask students if they know where smoke alarms should be installed.
4. Ask students how often batteries in smoke detectors should be changed.
 

B. Development-

1. Show what a smoke alarm looks like.
2. Have the smoke alarm sound so students can hear what it sounds like when it detects smoke.
3. Explain to students how smoke alarms work and their importance.
4. Explain where the smoke alarms should be installed.
5.Explain how often batteries should be changed.
6. Explain what should students do if they hear a smoke alarm in there home.
7. Identify a fire escape plan to get out of the house fast.
 

C. Practice-

1. Demonstrate to students how to put batteries in a smoke alarm.
2. Let students "pretend" to be sleeping, sound the alarm, let students demonstrate simulated escape routes and go to "safe zone" in classroom.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Let students practice dusting off a smoke alarm and replacing it's batteries properly.

2. Sound the alarm randomly- see which students actively go to designated safe zone in classroom.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

If a student is disabled, incorporate the proper way those students would react to a smoke alarm.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Review smoke alarms message.
2. Deliver quiz
3. Answer quiz together to ensure correct safety procedures are understood.
 

G. Closure-

1. Recap the importance of smoke alarms in the home.
2. Thank students for participating and making their homes safe.
