|
The goal of the Standards of Practice Module is to provide guidelines
for interpreters to practice accurately and consistently in the healthcare
setting and to support the development of medical interpreter skills
using telephonic and online student evaluation. |

4. Objectives-
|
STANDARDS OF PRACTICE
1. Summarize the medical interpreter's standards of practice based
on the International
Medical Interpreter's Association standards.
2. Explain the three major task areas of interpreting: interpretation,
cultural interface, and ethical behavior.
3. Given a medical encounter scenario, choose the most appropriate
interpreter action based on the Standards. |

assignments. |

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
This course is an independent-study, instructor-facilitated course.
Students are required to read sources of information and to summarize,
explain, and apply the concepts to simulated and real-life scenarios. |

B. Development-
Language requirements:
Fluency in English and in the non-English language.
At least high-school level proficiency in the nonnative language.
If a student does not demonstrate fluency in either language based
on performance on the assignments and exams, language coaching may
be recommended. The student must enroll in language coaching and demonstrate
satisfactory progress before the certificate of completion is issued. |

C. Practice-
Course Progression
We are continually revising and improving our courses based on national
standards and student needs/suggestions. Students are required to
complete the updated requirements before they can move to the next
module. Please check to make sure that the requirements have not changed
before you take the next module. |

D. Independent Practice-
3. Voicebox Submissions
Submission of assignment by telephone. Please read the instructions
under the Content Navigation.
NOTE: You may be asked to repeat a written or audio exam if there
are problems with submission, such as incomplete, or inaudible submissions,
technical glitches, etc. Since Internet services and accessibility
vary depending on your server, or my server, or other factors, if
there are any problems with your submissions due to technical malfunctions,
you are still responsible for submitting the required assignments
or exams.
4. FORUM POSTS: May be submitted directly in the FORUMS, or may be
recorded by Voicebox and we will post your recordings in the appropriate
Forum. |

F. Checking for understanding-
1. WRITTEN EXAM:
There are two exams for this module: One written multiple choice exam
and one oral exam - short answer or essay exam. You must pass both
exams in order to complete this module.
2. ORAL EXAM: Short - answer exam to be recorded by VoiceBox. (NEW
Requirement as of November 1, 2010). You may still submit the written
Short-answer exam until the end of October. On November 1st, the Short-answer
exam must be submitted by VoiceBox.
Explain the concepts in English and L2 (your non-English language).
You simply call the VoiceBox number and leave your responses as voicemail
messages. There is an extra fee for exam retakes. Please read the
information in the Test/Surveys section. |

G. Closure-
At the end of the module, complete and submit the Course Completion
Checklist and request access to the Code of Ethics module. |

7. Evaluation-
|
1. Completion checklist.
2. Participation in Discussions: Pass-Fail.
3. Written exam: 30% of grade.
4. Essay Exam: 30% of grade.
5. Final Exam or Project: 40% of grade.
Average Passing Grade: 70%
If the student does not demonstrate satisfactory performance during
the course, we will provide recommendations for continuing with the
program which may include repeating the modules or courses, or submitting
remedial assignments or projects. Certificate of completion will not
be issued if requirements are not completed. |
