Subject: Biomaterials Lab
1. Topic-
Trimming Study Models

2. Content-
Diagnostic casts, Study models, model trimmer, occlusion, bases, parallel

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Upon completion of this unit, the student will understand the safety procedures followed when using dental model trimmers.
2.Upon completion of this unit, the student will understand how to trim and finish a set of diagnostic study casts with correct angulations.
3. Upon completion of this unit, the student will understand the purpose of a study cast model.

4. Objectives-
After reading the corresponding textbook chapter, and reviewing the provided handouts, the student will be able to..

1. Identify at least 2 safety precautions taken while using model trimmers in the laboratory.
2. Construct a set of diagnostic study casts with at least 75% accuracy.
3. Explain at least 2 uses for a set of diagnostic study casts.

5. Materials and Aids-
Textbook
Dental Lab
Ruler
Pencil
Model Trimmer (At least 5 Trimmers)
Maxillary/Mandibular plaster models
Wax bite registration
Safety glasses/masks
Lab knife/scaler to remove excess bubbles of stone
PowerPoint presentation

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

For my educational methods in dental hygiene course, we are to complete a few class periods of student teaching, to prepare ourselves for entering the educational side of dental hygiene, and to see if education is a route we may want to take after completing our degree.

B. Development-

1. Use PowerPoint to present information regarding trimming study cast models.
2. Students follow along in textbook chapter, and with provided handouts on trimming study cast models.
3. Each of the following sections will be covered:
1) Purposes and uses for study cast models (3 min)
2)Safety procedures used with model trimmers in laboratory (2 min)
3)Preliminary steps to trimming study casts (2 min)
4)Trimming base of mandibular cast (3 min)
Practice items (5 min)
5)Trimming base of maxillary cast (3 min)
Practice items (5 min)
6)Trimming posterior border of mandibular and maxillary casts (5 min)
Practice items (5 min)
7)Trimming sides and heels of mandibular and maxillary casts (3 min)
Practice items (5 min)
8)Trimming anterior of mandibular and maxillary casts (3 min)
Practice items (5 min)
9)Finishing and polishing study cast set (3 min)

C. Practice-

1. Students will work in groups of 2 on provided handouts measuring correct angulations with a ruler on their study casts and using a pencil to mark correct areas to trim study casts. Working in pairs will allow students to practice their individual skills and use feedback provided from partner to help master steps for trimming. Breaking the lecture up and allowing for practice after each section of trimming is explained, allows students to apply what they hear directly.

D. Independent Practice-

1.Students will work on their own study cast models. They will follow the handouts on how to trim mandibular and maxillary casts. Students will use a ruler and pencil to measure correct angulations to trim mandibular and maxillary casts
2. Students will work in pairs in the laboratory, sharing a model trimmer, but individually as they complete their own set of diagnostic study models.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Pairs that finish early will help other students with questions and problems if needed.

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Instructor will monitor groups of students to assess correct angulations are being made while working on handouts.
2. Instructor will be available to help students that may have questions about how to trim study cast models.

G. Closure-

Review criteria of acceptable trimmed study cast model (3 min)

7. Evaluation-
Have students complete evaluation of learning (5 min)

8. Teacher Reflection-
Was there enough time to explain each section ?
Were students attentive or bored?
Did students comprehend material?
Did the students work well with partners?
How did the students perform on the handouts?
How did the students perform on their actual study casts?
