3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. To increase student's awareness of current events at local, national, and international levels.
2. To introduce students to the various forms of news media available and how to use those forms of media, particularly newspapers.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will become familiar with newspapers and the news the cover by learning about local, state, national, and world news cover in the local newspaper.
2. Students will learn how to find locations on a map and determine distances using map scales.
3. Students will learn to ask questions to further their understanding of events they have read about.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
A newspaper for each student, maps, rulers, writing/coloring materials for labeling maps.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Students will read, interpret, ask questions to further their understanding, and rewrite a news article of their choosing giving a different point of view on the subject.
2. Students will compare newspapers to radio/TV/Internet coverage of a story.
3. Students will choose to create an editorial cartoon or write a letter to the editor based on the article they read.
 

B. Development-

Students will be show examples of each activity planned.
 

C. Practice-

Worksheets.
 

D. Independent Practice-

Students will be asked to complete this project a second time completely on their own at home choosing a story from covered in any type of news media.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Pictures, images, graphs, and other visual aids to enhance understanding by hearing impaired students.
2. Teacher will make an effort to stand near hearing impaired students and speak slowly and clearly to make it easier for them to follow the lesson.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Grades for each activity will be based on what the student completed in that activity.
 

G. Closure-

1. This activity can be varied and evolve into many other activities.
2. This is a good homework activity and evaluation criteria can be varied according to the difficulty of the assignment.
