Using the web to research and write a debate case

Researching, discussing and writing a topical debate case for a tournament using Internet databases and other sources.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students learn how to use databases to research past information.
2.Students learn how to use the web to access news articles from other areas of the world.
3.Students are able to comprehend the research and make an argument from it.
4.Students use the computer to write and format the debate case.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Students are able to use information from online research and create rhetoric from it.
2.Students use research to debate and form opinions on topics.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
The writing lab center
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Introduce students to debate,
2.Show students videos of past debates.
 

B. Development-

1.In-class assignment - Form a quick one minute opinion on a simple subject matter, then have one student make a counter argument.
2.Give live feedback
 

C. Practice-

1.Hand out pre-made cases and allow students to form conclusions and arguments from them.
2.Bring students to library to allow them to begin researching.
3.Introduce students to extemporaneous speaking and allow them research these topics using the Internet
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Have students research subject matters laid out by teacher, and have them turn in what they find. Grade them on the amount of research they find, as well as quality.
2.Using the extemporaneous speaking, grade them on the methods of rhetoric they use.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

If students are unable to grasp researching online and finding quality information from it, show students how to find information through books and magazines.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.After students use web and writing center to create well-laid out debates, create an in-class debate.
2.Grade them on the physical debate itself.
3.Grade them on the research they provided from online use.
4.Grade their formatting for creating a debate case.
 

G. Closure-

Use online portfolio's to showcase their work.
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Did the student understand the overall meaning of debate?
2.Was the student able to navigate the databases and access the correct information?
3.Was the student able to format the debate correctly?
