3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
The goal of this lesson is aid the students in developing a strong sense of self esteem in order to avoid the pressures of joining gangs and other self destructive behaviors.
 
4. Objectives-
1. To get students to think about how they have the choices in life.
2.To help the students understand that no matter their circumstances, they can have emotional, mental and physical success.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
White Board, White Board markers, Resiliency Wheel, Book - "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Tough Stuff."
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

The goal of this lesson is aid the students in developing a strong sense of self esteem in order to avoid the pressures of joining gangs and other self destructive behaviors.
 

B. Development-

1. What is Self Esteem?
2. What is Resiliency?
3. Discuss the Resiliency Wheel.
4. What are some challenges you and your peers may face?
 

C. Practice-

1.Have students break into small groups of 3-4.
2.Have students choose a group leader.
 

D. Independent Practice-

Ask students to define "self-esteem", "resiliency" and "conflict".
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Provide visual and tangible pictures to accommodate students whom are visual learners.
2. Utilize students that are hangs on learners to assist the presenter.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Have students discuss how one can improve their "self-esteem".
2. Have students discuss whether they are or are not "resilient".
3. Have students discuss different types of conflict.
 

G. Closure-

1.Think of a person that you admire. What do you admire about them?
2. At home tonight, write a one page essay explaining a couple of ways that you are and are not like them.
 
7. Evaluation-
Journal entry - How can I avoid getting involved in self destructive behaviors?
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
Follow up with class in two days to evaluate their progress. Continue on a weekly basis and log the number of conflicts.
