3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
The student will demonstrate knowledge of the role of Virginia in the American Revolution:

 
4. Objectives-
1. by identifying the various roles played by whites, enslaved African Americans, free African Americans, and American Indians in the Revolutionary War era, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and James Lafayette.

2. by identifying the importance of the Battle of Great Bridge, the ride of Jack Jouett, and the American victory at Yorktown.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Laptop
SmartBoard
VS 5 b,c graphic organizer
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Describe and discuss the actions of James Lafayette. Why would he have performed these actions after the treatment he had endured?

Expand discussion to other people in the lesson, other events and concepts.

 

B. Development-

1. Put up page one of VS 5b,c. Use Think Aloud to demonstrate the usefulness of it. Work through pages 1 and 2 as a class.

2. This process can be done with pages 1-4 and later 5 and 6 or just do 1-6 together if the students can stand it. Pages 7-10 should be a separate lesson and assessment, but it is very similar in approach.
 

C. Practice-

On the smartboard, scramble the tags and have the class go to the board and match the tags to the headings. Take turns and repeat. Discuss each step.
 

D. Independent Practice-

Send home black and white versions of the GO for study.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. After a second round (day two) at the SmartBoard game, hand out page 3 of the GO. Hand out page 4 already cut up and mixed. Working individually, the students will reassemble the GO and glue it together,
2. This can be done with pages 1-4 and later 5 and 6 or just do 1-6 together if the students can stand it.
2.Repeat process for pages 7-10.
 

G. Closure-

Make connections between the elements of this lesson and things the kids are familiar with (Monticello, UVA, spying... )
