1. Topic-
Introduction to Unit: Events that Led to the American Revolution
 
2. Content-
Students will be hooked into the unit by uncovering how the Revolution and the events preceding it were focused close to their present day homes.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Generate student interest in unit
2. Students begin to understand how important MA was in the Revolution
3. Students will hear for the first time, names of people such as John Adams, Sam Adams, and John Hancock. As well as places such as Boston, Lexington and Concord, and Quincy.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will be engaged in the introduction lesson by following along with video clips and engaging in discussion
2. Students will seek more information by asking questions
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Video clips of The Patriot, John Adams, Sons of Liberty. GoogleMaps of driving directions from high-school to major historical events to display proximity. SmartBoard
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Diagnostic Assessment/Activator: "What role did MA play in the Revolution?"
2. HOOK- show video clips from John Adams, Patriot, Sons of Liberty
 

B. Development-

1. Discuss the activator responses
2. Discuss the movie clips
 

C. Practice-

Show students on SmartBoard how close the high-school is to an event from a film clip or from activator if one is presented via GoogleMaps
 

D. Independent Practice-

Ask the students to break into pairs and use netbooks to search for a historical figure or event discussed in the beginning of class. How far is the high-school from that person's homestead or the site of the historic event?
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Students will share their results/findings with the class. Random number generator will pick a group or groups to share their event/person and how far the event/person was from their school.
2. Exit Ticket: Name three local (Massachusetts based) businesses, cities/towns, or other building/structure etc... that derives their name from a person or event you heard in class today.
 

G. Closure-

1. Tomorrow we will be discussing the idea of liberty and what liberty in America means.
2. Come to class with your philosopher hats on.
