2. Topic-
Farewell to Manzanar, the Japanese Camps
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Display a clear understanding of how the Japanese camps were set up and located.
2. Recreate how the students felt the camps appeared. Students can either display their recreation of the Japanese camps on a poster board with multiple images or students can create a model.

5. Materials and Aids-
* This will be a take home project for the students. Only some time will be spent in class actually working on the project.
* The students will turn in the project 3 days after it is assigned.
* When assigned, students will have 30 minutes to do research in class and ask any questions about the Japanese camps.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

After having read Farewell to Manzanar, students will have a vivid understanding of what the camps looked like and felt like for the Japanese prisoners.

C. Practice-

From the students understanding, they will recreate what they think the camps looked like and felt like. Students can draw pictures displayed on a poster board or they can create a model. The poster board must display multiple images and views of the camps. (For example, students may display an image of a garden, and/or living location.) Or students may create a model displaying their understanding. (For example, in a 3D model or a shoe box display.)

D. Independent Practice-

In class students will research the different locations of the camps, the types of foods they had in their gardens and how each "home" looked for the families.

G. Closure-

* Students will be graded on how well they took an understanding to the story, how much research they did on the different camps.
* Students will also be graded on how well they display their understanding of how the Japanese lived in the camps.

This project will be worth 100 points.
* 100-90 points will display a clear understanding of the camps and show creativity and imagination.
* 89-80 points displays creativity and shows a vague understanding of the living conditions.
* 79-70 points displays creativity but lacks knowledge of the camps.
* 69-60 points minimal simplistic presentation of the camps with no reflection of research.
* 59 or lower displays no research or understanding. Very simple images that do not reflect the camps.
