1.Have students look at geography of U.S. to understand the 36 30 line.

3.Students will understand why the Missouri Compromise eased tensions between North and South.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Free Write:This question will help activate students knowledge from reading on the topic and content that is going to be covered. Followed by discussion of question to further cultivate prior knowledge and help with understanding.
2.Show hippocampus video to help jump start content
3.Work through handouts in small groups and then as a class with open discussion
 

B. Development-

1.Discuss and explain information in video
2.through PowerPoint work through geography of U.S. together discussing difference between north and south and west.
3.Explain how westward expansion was bringing tension to the union.
 

C. Practice-

1.Handout of Missouri compromise worksheet.
2.Walk together through the first worksheet explaining verb phrases and Questions or Conclusions parts of the worksheet.
3.Have each row work together in think pair share style of groups.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Once in groups students will work through and discuss Missouri Compromise and effects on U.S.
2.I will walk around the class and facilitate any questions and help with students understanding of the material.
3. Independently have students answer the question How did Americans movement West contribute to tension between the North and South?
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Visually having the short clip will help students who are visual and or audio learners in the classroom.
2.On the worksheet there are vocabulary words which we will go over at the beginning of class but are on the paper for reminders for my ELL learners.
3.I will also provide small groups for students who struggle with the worksheets.
4. I will also be walking around the classroom and go over any questions with any of my ELL learners and those who struggle with instruction and or understanding content.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. In formal assessment will take place in class open discussion of Free write question.
2.Students response to the geography map of the United States.
3.The completed worksheets will show students understanding which will determine if there needs to be reteaching the following day.
4. A formal assessment will occur with a 5 paragraph essay on the Missouri compromise will be assigned.
 

G. Closure-

1. go over the questions from the worksheet.
2.Re enforce major points on the Missouri Compromise.
 
7. Evaluation-
1. The grading of worksheet will measure students progress of understanding of content.
2. 5 paragraph essay with also be a measure of students understanding of the Missouri Compromise and also show students ability to connect events and show cause and effect.
