3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Have students recognize 50 states through song
2.Have students be able to identify their two states on a map
 
4. Objectives-
1.Large group activity: singing state song
2.Individual listening skills: listening for their 2 states in the song and hold up flash card
3.Individual activity: identify their two states on a map
 
5. Materials and Aids-
1.Flash cards with all 50 states written out
2.Blank map of United States for each student
3.Lyrics of song for each student
4.Music for large group activity
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Explain to students that today they will be introduced to the 50 states that make up the United States of America
2.Have students sit in a large group on the floor in front of your chair
3.Pass out shuffled flash cards so that each student will get 2 flash cards (have student take one and pass along)
 

B. Development-

1.Teach song by first singing alone and having students follow along with lyric sheet
2.Students will familiarize themselves with pace of song and lyrics
 

C. Practice-

1.In large group, sing as a class after teacher sings once.
2.Second time singing, have students be able to listen and recognize their state on their card to hold up when their state is sung
3.Go through twice with students holding up flash cards
SINGING A TOTAL OF 3 TIMES AS CLASS.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Pass out blank map of United States
2.Have students in pairs and both students help each other find and identify their state on their flashcards on map
3.Once that is done: come together as a class and check answers (if their is time) MAY NEED TO MOVE TO NEXT DAY
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Students who are deaf: show beat and have them watch teacher with beat and read along with lyrics
2.Students who are blind: have them show beat on their legs by tapping it while students sing
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.First time singing as class, listen to on key beat and rhythm. If not on key, slow down, and reteach to students
2.Hard time identifying their state with cards, slow down song, first time to get students familiar with time slot their card is in
3.Next day, go over where the states are in more depth
 

G. Closure-

1.End in pairs, identifying states on maps. Mention we will check the answers and go over the state locations tomorrow
2.Take lyrics home, and practice the song as much as possible
