1. Understanding the roles of rules and laws in every aspect of our lives.
2. To identify the roles of people in the courtroom.
3. To understand terms pertaining to the courtroom and a jury trial.
 
4. Objectives-
1. TLW define what a law is and why laws are important.
2. TLW identify/define the roles of people in the courtroom.
3. TLW identify the vocabulary pertaining to the components in a trial
 
5. Materials and Aids-
ELMO, Make Your Case, (interactive jury trial website), webster.com, newspapers, highlighters, worksheets
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Use graphic organizer KWL
2. Show interactive bulletin board with terms and definitions.
3. Ask for examples of laws that pertain to them at home and/or at school.
 

B. Development-

1. Use the examples given in introduction #3 to discuss laws and terms relating to the courtroom (when laws are broken).
2. Use information in KWL to elaborate on terms and laws.
3. Show vocabulary and discuss root words/origins of verdict, jury, etc.
 

C. Practice-

1. Use ELMO with worksheet of 'If, then' statements pertaining to laws to emphasize importance of laws.
2. Get students to make their own if, then statements. (If there were no rules at home about bedtime, then..)
3. Discuss the significance of each role in the courtroom.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Worksheet on legal vocabulary and people in the courtroom.
2. Using newspapers, students look for court/legal terms and stories about laws that are enforced or broken.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Get students to discuss the choices they made in the newspaper activity.
2. Interactive bulletin board- students take turns matching terms to definitions.
 

G. Closure-

1. Emphasize the importance of the terms that were learned, because they will be used throughout the entire unit
2. Ask students to be aware of rules and laws at home at school and in society that protect them.
 
7. Evaluation-
1. Interactive bulletin board.
2. Worksheet with terms
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
Must be careful to screen newspapers because many of the articles regarding laws and courts have mature subject content.
