Montesquieu and a different form of Government
 
2. Content-
-Students will compare the ideas of the Mayflower Compact with those of Montesquieu and his Separation of Powers.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students will discover the differences between monarchy and the three branch government of today.
2. Students will identify the powers of an absolute monarchy and the limited powers of today's government and how this affects citizens.
 
4. Objectives-
Students will be able to display an understanding of modern US government and 18th century British Monarchy through role play
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Mayflower Compact handout
SmartBoard
"Class Constitution"
Flow chart of three branches of Gov't.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Activator- On flow chart- identify each branch of Government and label its role and its power/limitations under Montesquieu's Separation of Powers from last night's HW reading.
 

B. Development-

1. Scaffolding from students prior knowledge of Pilgrims and Mayflower- Read Mayflower Compact and discuss what kind of Government the Pilgrims were living under and agreeable to.
2. Discuss activator and the new ideas of Montesquieu's separation of powers government.
 

C. Practice-

Role Play Monarchy and 3-Branch system of Government. In Monarchy, Teacher serves as King and imposes law and punishment unilaterally. In modern system class divides into legislative and judicial branch with teacher as President. Handout of "Class Constitution" is followed and as rules/laws are developed by President or Legislature, each branch goes through it's checks and balances.
 

D. Checking for understanding-

Rapid Fire Questions
What are differences between Monarchy and 3 branch system in role play?
What was the Mayflower Compact/Who did it give all power to? Etc...
 

E. Closure-

Now that we understand what the Colonists will eventually demand, tomorrow we'll see what events push them to demand change.
