1. Use the Internet and textbook to collect information about presidents and transform facts into trading card

2. Write a letter to a United States President of student's choice and ask them questions regarding concerns or criticism over the government during their time in office

3. The concept of time and chronological order of historical events

 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will use trading cards to share information about chosen president with others

2. Students will use research to write a letter relating to a certain time period

3. Students will develop a greater understanding of the order of historical events
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will be able to research facts about presidents through the use of books and the Internet

2. Write a letter using proper technique and format

3. Create and interpret a timeline of a the events relating to the chosen president's time leading up to and in office
 
5. Materials and Aids-
-Lined paper
-Writing utensils
-Guided research handout
-Textbook
Internet
-Word processing program
-Trading card (index card)
-Other reference books
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Discuss President's Day and when/how the holiday began being observed

2. Ask each student to choose one president (the same president can not be used twice)

3. Hand out a worksheet to each student that will assist them in collecting research about the president

4. Take the students to the library to check out reference material and used the computer center to collect information
 

B. Development-

1. The data must include: full name, birthplace, years in term, state of residency, political party, and historical events pertaining to presidency

2. Students should find and print off a small picture of the president.
 

C. Practice-

1. As a class, create a timeline of the order of president's

2. Write two unique or influential facts about each president
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Use the research to create a trading card

2. Write a letter to a president
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Students can listen to audio books to obtain information

2. Students can use websites that have the audio option in order to listen to the article

3. Students can work in pairs of two (instead of individually)
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. The students will use the trading cards to quiz each other. This can work two ways. The students can be quizzed by showing them the name and picture of a president and asking what important events pertained to their presidency. The other option is reading facts about a president and asking the students for the name.

2. Students will read their letters in small groups of three to five students. They will than discuss the challenges and obstacles the government faced during this time.
 

G. Closure-

1. Students have developed an understanding the order of presidency.

2. Students have an greater understanding of what historical events are associated with each president.
 
7. Evaluation-
1. Students will take a matching exam based off the classes research in which they pair events with presidents

2. Students will write a short essay about how the president they researched impacted the United States
