Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.
the teacher will read the epilogue at the end of the book to the class as an introduction to the book and the issues that are present. Then the teacher will hold a discussion with the class concerning the prejudice and ethnic classifications presented in the book.
 

B. Development-

1. As a class students will note the instances where the African Americans are still segregated and are treated differently because of their race this can be documented on a roadmap.
The mention of the black bathrooms in Alabama in the family discussion
The fact that the school in flint Michigan is all black
Kenny being dragged from class to class as an example
The bombing on a black church.

2. students will bring questions and vocabulary words to reading circle
 

C. Practice-

students will recall prejudice in the book and discuss it with a group
 

D. Independent Practice-

students will journal
Kenny finds Russell to be his saving grace in the hopes that the new boy will stop people from picking on him. Have you ever felt this way? Looking back and thinking about Kenny and how he feels do you think this is the right way to look at a person?

The teacher takes Kenny from classroom to classroom saying he should be a model since being black puts everyone at a disadvantage. What do you think makes you disadvantaged, or are you? Why? What do you think makes you special, like Kenny's ability to read?

There is a bombing at the church. It is believed that the bombing happened because of upset about African American rights. Kenny thought Joelet was in the church. What would you do if you were Kenny?

Do you think bombings are the way to handle upsets over an issue? What do you think would be a better way to handle upset feelings?

 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

2.the teacher or peers can assist with vocabulary
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.the class will be dividend into groups and look at other instances where extreme acts were taken in anger over an issue and how those acts affected innocent people just like the girls at the church.
 

G. Closure-

1. watch a video and discuss
2. songs about the time

1. are the journals thoughtful?
2. are the responses to the video and songs thoughtful?
3. do students show an understanding of the hardships?
