5. Materials and Aids-
-picture of bousillage
-bricks
-straw
-metal
-grass
-mud

-journals

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

TTW start by showing the students a brick, some straw, and some metal. She will then ask the students if they knew what all of these things could be used for. (wait for response) TTW continue and explain by saying, "yes, all of these things can be used to build houses." TTW ask the students what they think houses were built out of in the old days and how they are built now. This will get the kids thinking about what they have learned previously.

B. Development-

After the focus activity, TTW introduce the word "bousillage" by writing it on the board and explaining to the kids what it means. TTW post a picture of a house made of bousillage on the smartboard. TTW explain that is the materials creoles, cajuns, French, and other Louisiana settlers used to build their houses when they first moved here. It was brought over from France. Bousillage is made of horsehair, clay, straw, etc. TTW ask what other items? Student answers may include, mud, grass, etc.

C. Practice-

After the teacher explains what bousillage is, she will allow the students to create their own. TTW give them mud, straw, and leaves to create their own bousillage. They can make a small house or anything else they would like. After completion, they will set them outside to dry.

D. Independent Practice-

Each day the students will go outside and check on their bousillage. They will keep a record of their own bousillage and how hard it is getting and how quick it is drying. They will then share with the class and compare their results.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

The teacher will assist those students who need special accommodations. Pictures will be shown for students and they will also be doing a hands on activity.

F. Checking for understanding-

TTW ask the students where the term bousillage originally came from. TTW ask the students what all bousillage is made of.

G. Closure-

TTW review the meaning of bousillage and remind the students where it came from. TTW also remind the students that bousillage is very important to our history of Louisiana.

7. Evaluation-
TTW grade each student based off of their ability to use all of the materials to create their bousillage.
