Objectives-
1. students will be able to determine specific hardships of African Americans before the civil rights act.
2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the differences in the treatment of whites and African Americans
 
Materials and Aids-
large construction paper and markers,a video on the great depression, Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry, paper and pencils, a hat,an article on rock nine, and computers/ lab time for the students to research.
 
Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. We will look at two diary entries/poems from both times and compare and contrast them. Using a Venn diagram
2.As a class we will create a timeline pinpointing events that occurred between the two times
3.Watch a short video outlining the great depression and its effects. Seeing the hardships of the great depression how do you think African Americans were affected? Was it harder/ easier/ the same and why do you think this?
 

B. Development-

1. the class will read Ro of Thunder Hear My Cry.
2.Students will be divided and then will act out skits based on divisions of the book.
 

C. Practice-

Analyze the poem at the beginning of chapter 11. Identify its significance to the theme of the story.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Students will draw characters from a hat and will write a short poem similar to that of chapter 11 in spirit of that character
Teachers role provide specific examples these are only options they are not confined to these events
When mother gets fired
When the kids have to walk to the school and get splashed by the bus
When TJ gets accused of attacking the white man
When Casey gets beaten Mr. Simmons.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. for an individual who is not at the same reading level a book on tape may be a reasonable accommodation
2.if researching is too overwhelming assist with research or provide articles for them to have for the next activity.
3.if there is an anxiety issue with performing skits they could write or perform solo for the teacher at a designated time.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Now that you have read Roll of thunder Hear my Cry reflect and pinpoint examples where it was harder to be African American during the great depression.
 

G. Closure-

Students learn some of the history of segregation in the United States by reading about the Little Rock Nine, a courageous group of students who helped advance educational opportunities for African Americans in the 1950s.

Get into groups and research other courageous acts of rebellion against racial injustices. Hold on to events found by students for timeline activity.

7. Evaluation-
1. do the journal entries show honest reflection?
2.do the students make an effort to provide relevant information for the timeline and the research project.
3. a brief comprehensive quiz over the big themes of the book.
