3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will summarize the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE.
2. Students will identify who Leonidas and the "300"� at Thermopylae are.
3. Students will list six (6) important events in the Greco-Persian Wars through the use of sequential art
 
4. Objectives-
1. Analyze the major events of the wars between Persia and the Greek city-states and the reasons why the Persians failed to conquer the Aegean region
2. Appreciate historical perspectives--the ability (a) describing the past on its own terms, through the eyes and experiences of those who were there, as revealed through their literature, diaries, letters, debates, arts, artifacts, and the like; (b) considering the historical context in which the event unfolded--the values, outlook, options, and contingencies of that time and place; and (c) avoiding "present-mindedness," judging the past solely in terms of present-day norms and values.
3. Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and large portions of the text relate to each other and the whole.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Ask students by show of hand to show if they have seen movie 300
2. Let them know movie is based on comic by same name
3. Then introduce that comic and movie are based on Battle of Thermopylae
 

B. Development-

1. Lecture/PowerPoint on Battle of Thermopylae and the 300
2. Introduce students to comics and 300 by Frank Miller
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will compare panels from comic 300 to actual events
2. Students will analyze one historical figure from the Battle of Thermopylae and create a comic book hero based on the person
 

D. Independent Practice-

Students will create a six panel comic strip based on the 300.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Advanced students must complete additional research on historical figure
2. IEP students will only complete independent practice
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Explain in detail how a vastly outnumbered and outgunned Greek force was able to hold out against a much larger and more powerful Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae
 

G. Closure-

1. Ask students what they liked most about the comic adaptation of the 300
2. By show of hands see if students think 300 was good adaptation
