2. Content-
Nationalism, Militarism, Imperialism,Alliances, Crisis in the Balkans, Unification of Germany, & Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Knowledge- The students will recognize and list the various causes of World War One.
2.Comprehension: The students will describe the causes of World War One.
3.Synthesis: The students will arrange the causes of World War One on a graphic organizer and discuss the results.
4. Evaluation- The students will assess how the Causes of WWI led to events of the 21st century and (some) their own personal lives.
 
4. Objectives-
1.The students will examine the causes of World War One including the rise of nationalism, militarism, and alliances in Europe.
2.The students will examine the causes of World War One including the unification of Germany and Otto Von Bismark's leadership
3.The students will examine the causes of World War One including the rise of ethnic and ideological conflicts- the Balkans, Austria-Hungary, the decline of the Ottoman Empire.
4. The students will examine the causes of World War One including the impact of European imperialism.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Handouts Causes of WWI, Pre-1914 European Alliances, PowerPoint, maps & documents for Gallery Walk, copies of graphic organizer: The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century, video clip of the causes of WWI, computer, projector, TV/VCR, poster paper and markers, whitboards and markers.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.White Board Focus Question: What do you know about World War One?
2.Discussion of responses
3.Gallery Walk
 

B. Development-

1.As students arrive, take attendance, then ask students to respond to the Focus question on their whiteboards. Then discuss many of their answers.
2. Connect Focus Question to Gallery Walk. Provide Gallery Walk Instructions, then allow 2 minutes maximum per document. Students return to their seats. Review student responses. Check for Understanding.
3.Revert back from the progression of WWI to focus on the Causes of WWI.
4. Show PowerPoint slides, tell stories, Students read paragraph handouts. Check for Understanding after each reading.
5. Show video clip about the assassination of Franz Ferdinand (5 minutes)
6. Connect WWI to 21st Century: Why Should we study WWI? Ask students for responses, then continue in PowerPoint to last slide and more student readings and checks for understanding.
 

C. Practice-

1.Students will complete a graphic organizer "The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century" filling in the cause of the war, the nations involved and the results. (This will begin today and continue throughout days 2 and 3 of the background of WWI.
2. Students will read aloud various reading selections.
3.Students will formulate opinions about the importance of the causes of WWI and how they still affect the Global Community today.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.The Great War Graphic Organizer
2.Individual Reading Selections
3.Individual Verbal Questions
4. Closing Activity: Ticket out the door
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Provide a printed copy of PowerPoint notes.
2. For reading aloud, provide simplest reading selections to those students with reading difficulties.
3.Pair students of limited abilities with those of higher skills. (This was arranged by the new seating chart.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Focus Questions and discussions
2.Gallery Walk and discussion
3.Verbal Checks for understanding embedded throughout the lesson
4. Graphic Organizer
5. Ticket out the door
 

G. Closure-

Students will complete a ticket out the door focusing on their viewed importance of today's lesson and hand it to the teacher as they leave the class.
