Students will discover other cultures through research of popular attractions across the world using Google Earth and ArcGIS
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Learn how to navigate Google Earth
2.Discover diverse cultures from several different countries.
3.Develop a personalized world tour.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Students will demonstrate use of Google Earth
2.Students will choose and learn about several cultures of their choosing.
3.Students will present their own personal world tour
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Computers with Google Earth and ArcGIS software, Internet connections, encyclopedias (online)
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Students will select from a list of popular travel destinations several to research.
2.Students will be instructed on using Google Earth and ArcGIS software.
3.Students will begin a several class period research project with an end result of presenting their own world tour.
 

B. Development-

1.The teacher will demonstrate their own tour so that the students know what to expect.
2.Online tutorials can be used to help students learn how to use the software.
3.A step by step checklist will be provided to keep students on track.
 

C. Practice-

1.Students will work in class with teacher supervision to provide help.
2.A step by step guide will ensure students can learn and work on their own after a few practice lessons.
3.Resource links will be provided in case a student needs additional explanation.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Students will choose their locations to research and have them approved by the teacher.
2.A step by step guide will be checked off as the project moves a long and reaches key points.
3.Students will submit a report on their research before presenting their projects.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Students with trouble reading can use ReadingBar software while using the Internet to have words read to them.
2.Students who are unable to use the computers on their own can partner with another student or an aid.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Students will submit a report on their project and what they learned.
2.A completed checklist will be turned in to ensure all parts of the assignment are completed.
3.Students will present their own personalized world tour.
 

G. Closure-

1.Google Earth and ArcGIS are great tools that students can continue to use to learn more about other cultures.
2.Not only have we learned a lot about societies around the world, we have also learned to integrate technology into the social studies curriculum.
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Have the students been able to fully master the lesson?
2.Is there strong signs that students gained a wealth of knowledge and were engaged for the lesson?
