Aboriginal Perspectives
I would give the students 2 definitions to start with,taken from dictionary.com they will have a better understanding.
1. principle: An accepted or professed rule or action or conduct: a person of good moral principles.
2. philosophy: The critical study of the basic principles and concepts of a particular branch of knowledge, especially with a view to improving or reconstituting them. The philosophy of science.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students will be able to, know about some of the issues that affect identity of Aboriginal peoples.
2.Students will learn to recognize and positively address biases, stenotypes, prejudice and racism.
 
4. Objectives-
1.FO Identify the major elements of aboriginal worldviews, CCT,C
2.LO Deepen understanding of Aboriginal worldviews,CCT, PSVS
3.LO Make connections between Aboriginal worldviews and personal worldviews. IL, C, PSVS
 
5. Materials and Aids-
-IWAP11 First Principles.
-notebooks, pen, and hand out.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.I would start by having the students write down the definitions, principles and philosophy into their notebooks.
2. To ensure understanding, I would give examples from my own life.
3. Ask the students for examples from theirs.
4. I would ask the student, What principles govern your lives? and the next question I would ask is, what is your philosophy on a given topic?
 

B. Development-

1.Students would read the IWAP11 First Principles out loud and taking turns reading 1 principle each.
2.I would have a class discussion about the meaning of the twelve principles.
3.I would conduct a class discussion by including questions like:
A) Give examples from nature of the idea that all things in the universe are connected in some way.
B)Give examples of both types of change: the coming together of things and the coming apart of things.
C)Give an example of a true learning experience?
 

C. Practice-

1.I would ask the students the question, Who has been your guide thus far on your journey and how has he/she assisted?
2. Next question I would ask is, Whose responsibility is one's success according to principle 12? and why does this make sense?
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.I would have the students interview an individual, who has achieved success.
2.The students would find out about the struggle to achieve the success and the rewards upon getting there.
3.Students would ask individuals to define success and they would compare it to their own definitions.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Have the students that are squinting to see the chalkboard sit in front.
2.I would have the students that talk lots in the front, and separate them from their friends.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.I would ask if everybody has the definitions principles and philosophy in their notebooks.
2.I would ask the class, if they are aware that the 12 principles is an Aboriginal perspective.
 

G. Closure-

1.I would ask the students if they have any questions.
2.If they have questions I would do my best to answer, or prepare to answer it for the student the next class.
3. remind the students that their interviews need to be handed in by due date.
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Participation in class discussions.
2.Interview assignment completed by the due date given.
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
I would do some self reflections by asking myself:
Did my lesson flow smoothly?
Were the students engaged?
were the students interested in the lesson?
do I think I've reached my goals?
