3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will learn the different types of maps.
2. Students will learn vocabulary associated with maps.
3. Students will use maps to find specific places.

4. Objectives-
1. Students will be able to distinguish the difference between topographical maps, road maps, world maps and physical maps.
2. Students will be able to define the different elements on a map.
3. Students will be able to identify map elements on different types of maps.
4. Students will use coordinates to grid specific places on maps.
5. Students will work in groups to use given coordinates and follow a map to a specific destination.

5. Materials and Aids-
1. Globe, maps and posters of maps.
2. Projector, transparencies of maps and coordinates.
3. Sentence strips with definitions of map vocabulary
4. Paper, pencils and rules to grid coordinates.
5. Preprinted maps of school and coordinates.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Beginning Questions: a) What do maps tell us? b) What do we use maps for? c) Are there different types of maps?
2. Pass out different types of maps for students to compare and contrast.
3. Introduce how we use coordinates to grid specific destinations.

B. Development-

1. Use projector and transparency to show how to find specific places on maps with coordinates.
2. Use a ruler over the projector to show how students should use the coordinates to find their destination.
Give examples and non examples so students know what not to do. Use map vocabulary while graphing coordinates.

C. Practice-

1. Students will be given a worksheet of a map with coordinates to graph. The first one will be done as a class.
2. The rest of the sheet will be done independently as the teacher walks around assisting students having difficulty.
3.The teacher will review the answers and re-teach any concepts that students are not understanding.

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will be placed into groups and given a map of the school with coordinates that they need to graph.
2. Students will work together to graph coordinates using rulers and markers to track their route.
3. Groups will present their maps and explain how they found their location through coordinates.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. As map vocabulary is being discussed, corresponding pictures will be placed next to the words for ESL and visual learners.
2. The power point presentation of map information has pictures and sound clips to tend to all learning styles.
3. Students are placed into groups based on academic ability, and given coordinates to graph based on these abilities.

F. Checking for understanding-

1. The teacher will walk around the room and check student worksheets as they are graphing coordinates of maps.
2. The teacher will ask comprehension questions throughout the lesson to make sure students understand the vocabulary.
3. Groups will present their maps which will be checked to make sure they were done accurately.

G. Closure-

The lesson will end with a discussion about what we have learned. Students will be put into groups and have to come up with three new things they learned this lesson that they want to discuss with the class.
