3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students will become more familiar with nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, in order to prepare for future lessons on how changing affixes alters a word's meaning.
 
4. Objectives-
1.After reviewing information on how words are formed, students will be introduced to how words are organized called parts of speech.
2. Students learn four parts of speech and practice determining what role a word plays in a given sentence.
3. This lesson and subsequent practice exercise should help get the students thinking about how to categorize words.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
1. Student Academic Vocabulary Notebooks (AVNs) 2. Break Up! Activity(in AVNs)
3. Parts of Speech Chart (in AVNs)
4. Word Jobs Activity (in AVNs)
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Students review word forms and gain confidence in pulling words apart.
2.Review definition - base word
3. Break Up! activity with partner.
 

B. Development-

1. Put Parts of Speech Chart on doc. cam.
2. Review Parts of Speech chart giving examples for each one.
 

C. Practice-

1.Go through the chart with students helping fill in the "word role" and "parts of speech" columns.
2. When students have a firm understanding of what has been taught, they can work independently.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will work on Word Jobs Activity independently at their tables.
2. They will fill in the "word role" and the "parts of speech" column based on what they learned.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Focus in on: Tyler, Dominique, Joel, Baker
2. Readjust those who are misguided.
3. Make sure they are defining the word role correctly.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Review and correct chart whole class.
2. Share answers.
3. Students use own words to define "word role".
 

G. Closure-

1.What role do words play in sentences?
2. Students write their thoughts on their scratch paper and stack in middle of table.
3. Teacher collects by table.
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Teacher reviews students' answer to concluding question.
2.Teacher makes class assessment based on students' answers.
