Cerebral palsy education, range of motion exercises, increasing
parent resources and involvement with special needs community |

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
|
1.When given a topic about Cerebral Palsy, Hannah's parents will
read and understand one website or article to increase their knowledge
of their child's disability within 2 weeks.
2.When given a home exercise program, Hannah's parents will perform
Upper Extremity range of motion exercises after her bath time 3 out
of 5 days per week.
3.When given a list of parent resources, Hannah's parents will attend
a support group for parents of children with disabilities once per
month. |

4. Objectives-
|
1.Hannah's parents will be able to discuss website/article with
therapist at home visit to ensure parents understand article and answer
questions as needed.
2.Hannah's parents will complete weekly check off sheet of exercises
to be reviewed at each weekly home visit.
3.Hannah's parents will keep a journal on topics discussed at support
meetings. Progress will be made when Hannah's parents are feeling
more empowered and supported by others. |

5. Materials and Aids-
|
Visual aids provided will be journal or research articles, a home
exercise program on worksheets with a check off sheet. Hannah's parents
will also be responsible for keeping a written journal. |
|
|
6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1.Discuss importance of family's knowledge of cerebral palsy to
properly care for Hannah, advocate for her and help others understand
her condition.
2.Introduce range of motion exercises and go over weekly exercise
checklist.
3.Provide Hannah's parents with resources in the community for special
needs individuals and support groups for families with special needs
within the community. |

B. Development-
1.Demonstrate different ways to search for articles related to Cerebral
Palsy on the computer, and help family identify credible Internet
sites.
2.Demonstrate range of motion exercises on Hannah and ensure that
parents are comfortable with trying exercises.
3.Have Hannah's parents identify a support group that they would be
interested in attending. |

C. Practice-
1.Observe parents searching the Internet to find an article about
cerebral palsy.
2.Observe and instruct parents on ROM exercises.
3.Practice dialogue that would take place within a support group |

|
D. Independent Practice-
1. Family will locate 2 articles to present to therapist the next
treatment session.
2.Family will perform ROM exercises on Hannah 3 times before next
treatment session.
3.Family will have date/time/location for one support group within
the area. |

|
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
Hannah's parents have a high school education, so some material
might be too high level for them to understand. Reading material may
need to be explained to Hannah's parents. |
|
|
F. Checking for understanding-
1.Check that Hannah's parents understand search engines and how
to research cerebral palsy
2. Check that Hannah's parents understand ROM and exercises.
3. Check that Hannah's parents have resources needed for community
support and they are aware of the benefits of networking within the
community. |

|
G. Closure-
1. Ensure that Hannah's parents are comfortable with searching for
literature on cerebral palsy, and plan to discuss article next session.
2. Ensure that Hannah's parents are comfortable performing ROM exercises
on Hannah. Go over checklist and plan on reviewing next session.
3. Ensure that parents will locate support groups in area and parents
will have one organization to contact by next session. |
