Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
|
1. For students to understand similarities between Deaf and Hearing
Cultures.
2. For students to understand differences between Deaf and Hearing
Cultures. |

Objectives-
|
1. Students should be actively engaged in the discussion of cultures.
2. Students should participate in a small group setting by sharing
opinions and observances. |
|
|
Materials and Aids-
|
Book: For Hearing People Only
If possible a book for each group. |
|
|
Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1. Have "Culture" written on the board. Ask the students what comes
to mind when they think of this word. Spider web their answers around
the "Culture". |
|
|
B. Development-
1.Expand to ask what types of cultures they can think of (Japanese,
Native American, German, Southern?) lead to American, then Hearing
and Deaf.
2. Show display of empty Venn diagram. Explain activity of using book
chapters to compare Hearing and Deaf Cultures. |

|
C. Practice-
1. Split class into groups. Assign 3-4 different chapters of book
to each group.
2. Give them time to discuss chapters and fill out Venn diagrams. |
|
|
Checking for understanding-
1. Come back together as a class.
2. Have each group share their findings with class, then fill in empty
Venn diagram on board (or overhead). Rotate who shares and writes.
3. Ask class if they agree with where group placed the topic. |
|
|
Closure-
1. Review differences and similarities between the two cultures.
2. Emphasize the importance of having an open mind and asking questions
instead of making assumptions.
(Teacher can repeat in several classes, after all, there are 131 chapters!) |

Evaluation-
|
On Unit Quiz, have a blank Venn Diagram, have them list __ number
of differences and similarities between Deaf and Hearing Cultures. |
