Subject: Functional/Safety Skills
1. Topic-
I can use a seat belt and be safe!

2. Content-
Teach the safety need and procedures of connecting, leaving in place for travel, and taking off a seatbelt.
buckle, latch, strap

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
The students will be able to demonstrate the steps needed to connect, leave in place for travel, and then disconnect the seatbelt with 100% accuracy rate for 5 trials.

4. Objectives-
1. The students will be able to follow the steps to connect the seatbelt.
2. The students will be able to leave the seatbelt attached and in place during the simulated travel time.
3. The students will be able to disconnect the seatbelt correctly at the end of the simulated travel time.

5. Materials and Aids-
A replica car seat that has a seat belt attached for use in the classroom.
Crayons, markers, paper,

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Ask, "Who likes to go for rides in the car?" "I know I do!" "Where are some places we can go?" "Well I am going to go on a pretend trip to the store." 2. Using the replica car seat and seatbelt, place yourself in the front of the class and think Aloud the steps while identifying each part: 1).Pull on the belt over your shoulder/waist and place the buckle into the latch;2). Leave the belt latched and pretend with engine sounds and role play traveling down the road (emphasizing the need to leave the belt in place);3). Next, car stops and now you demonstrate unbuckling the latch and getting out of the car.

B. Development-

1. Modeling this a second time, but ask for student input as to where you would like to visit.
2. Explain explicitly that seatbelts are a safety device and that everyone must wear them to travel in a vehicle. Engage students in discussion about being safe.
3. Ask for one or two volunteers to role play the same scenario. (Students often learn or internalize better when their own peers are modeling).

C. Practice-

1. As part of the daily stations develop a station activity that focuses on the seatbelt/safety procedures. Provide students with opportunities to feel comfortable with the seatbelting steps.
2. Students will move through stations which are all safety related, in small groups.

D. Independent Practice-

See practice activities

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Students who use a wheelchair will participate orally/visually and will be included in the step by step process and discussions.

F. Checking for understanding-

Formative Assessment: For each day of the safety focus week each student will be assessed one-on-one in a hands on demonstration of how to use the seatbelt effectively and accurately. This can be done at anytime in the day at teacher discretion

G. Closure-

Have students create a picture/poster of themselves riding in the car and following the safety procedures of wearing a seatbelt.

7. Evaluation-
Teacher observations and formative assessment each day in the one-on-one demonstration.
