1. Topic-
|
Microsoft Office Software |
|
|
2. Content-
|
Key vocabulary: tab, group, and command. |
|
|
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
|
1.Students will be able to use and comprehend the Microsoft Office
vocabulary "tab", "group", and "command" as it applies to following
directions to create a product in Microsoft Office. |
|
|
4. Objectives-
|
1.- Students will demonstrate comprehension of the vocabulary "tab",
"group", and "command" by correctly clicking on tabs, groups, and
commands when given instruction through an interactive Google presentation.
2.Students will demonstrate comprehension of the vocabulary "tab",
"group", and "command" through one or both of the following activities:
*Students will read and follow a set of directions by correctly comprehending
the vocabulary "tab", "group", and "command" within the set of directions.
*Students will create a set of directions to follow in order to complete
a task, and will correctly use the vocabulary "tab", "group", and

- Video production/editing software (optional)
- "WordArt Titles" document
-"WordArt Titles" example video
-"Creating Directions in Microsoft Office" document
-"Creating Directions in Microsoft Office" example video
-LCD projector
|
|
|
6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
Display the Microsoft Office ribbon on the projector. Ask students
to explain how certain buttons are organized. Responses may include
examples such as the following: "All buttons to change the font are
next to each other", "All different ways to add pictures and graphs
have the word "Insert" above them." |
|
|
B. Development-
Explain that the top toolbar in any Microsoft Office document is
called a "ribbon", and that the ribbon is arranged into the following:
"tabs", "groups", and "commands". Point out examples of tabs, groups,
and commands, and teach students the mnemonic "tabs - top, commands
- center, groups - ground (bottom)" |
|
|
C. Practice-
Students will access the Microsoft Office Ribbon game presentation
via an e-mail link or via a class website. In this activity, students
will be prompted to click on a particular tab, group, or command.
The teacher can guide students to finding the appropriate place to
click by reminding them of the mnemonic described in the "Development"
section above. |
|
|
D. Independent Practice-
Students will choose one of the following assignments: "WordArt
Titles" or "Creating Directions in Microsoft Office". In the "WordArt
Titles" assignment, students will follow written directions that require
students to reference tabs, groups, and commands to figure out how
to make the title of a PowerPoint slide automatically appear as WordArt.
In the "Creating Directions in Microsoft Office" assignment, students
will create written or video directions on how to add and edit an
object in a Microsoft Office document, and should correctly use the
vocabulary "tab", "group", and "command" in their explanation.
|
|
|
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
Students are given a choice about which independent practice assignment
they prefer to complete. Students who struggle with reading may prefer
the "Creating Directions in Microsoft Office" assignment, while students
who do better with step-by-step directions such as students with ADHD
may perform better on the "WordArt Titles" assignment. Students are
also able to access various resources on the computer which will differentiate
instruction. Students who complete the "Creating Directions in Microsoft
Office" assignment may choose to complete their work using Microsoft
Word, PowerPoint, Windows Live Movie Maker, and speech-to-text recognition
software. Students can also view an example video for either assignment
to provide appropriate scaffolding for struggling learners. More advanced
learners will be directed to begin completing the second assignment
or create a poster or video about what they learned (they will have
a choice). |
|
|
F. Checking for understanding-
The teacher will circulate throughout the room to check for understanding
and to prompt students to understand the vocabulary "tab", "group",
and "command" as necessary. Students will be assessed based on the
feedback rubrics contained on the "WordArt Titles" and "Creating Directions
in Microsoft Office" documents. |
|
|
G. Closure-
The teacher will have students engage in a "Think, Pair, Share"
activity in groups of two or three in which they answer the following
questions:
-What are tabs, groups, and commands?
-How can you remember the difference between tabs, groups, and commands?
-Is there any other way that you can think of to remember the difference
between tabs, groups, and commands? |
|
|
7. Evaluation-
|
Students will be assessed based on the feedback rubrics contained
on the "WordArt Titles" and "Creating Directions in Microsoft Office"
documents. |
