1. This lesson is to expose students to the dangers that exist in the cyber world

2. This lesson is also to help the students avoid such dangers by understanding how to use the privacy settings
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will be able to demonstrate how to use the privacy settings (Facebook as an example)

2. Students will be able to understand the dangers of using a social network
3. Students will be able to demonstrate respect towards their classmates and peers
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Handouts, computer, and projector
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. What is social networking?
2. Are social networking sites harmful?
3. How to protect and prevent such dangers
 

B. Development-

1. Social networks are websites that allow individuals to connect with others and share information about oneself.
2. Social networking sites are dangerous.
-cyber bullying
-stalking
-hacking
-stealing identity
3. Protect and prevent dangers by using the privacy settings (demonstrate on the computer and projector)
-who can search for me
-who can see my photos
-who can see my information (can select what information is visible)
-who can add me as a friend

Also, be aware of the kind of information that you put into your profile.
What not to share:
-email
-telephone number
-address
-other private information
 

C. Practice-

Create a "fake" facebook account and go through the privacy settings to make the profile safe or limit what is available for other users.
 

D. Independent Practice-

Assignment: For those that use a social network, go through the privacy settings and limit what is visible to other members. Take a screen shot and print it out.

For those that do not use social networks, research and find 3 other social networks aside from the ones mentioned in class.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Colored handouts are used for those that have a difficult time seeing
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. What is social networking?
2. Give examples of the dangers of social networks
3. Give examples of what you should not share on these networks
 

G. Closure-

Open for questions or clarifications.
