The first skill
that is mentioned is the serve. This is an essential
skill in volleyball and is the basic before anyone starts
to learn the sport. Serves can be classified as overhand
and underhand. Underhand is meant for beginners because
its very easy and requires less strength. The overhand
serve is for power and speed. It is hard because it
requires strength and good accuracy.
|
Player can barely master
the underhand serve. Serves can go over the net by chance
and most times it is not served over. The ball may be
applied with too much strength and fly to the roof.
In general, the athlete in this level cannot serve properly.
|
The player is now able
to master the underhand serve and can serve with good
accuracy, the ball almost always never miss and can
always land in the court. However, the serve has no
power or speed and is extremely easy to return.
|
Now, starting to get
an introduction to the overhand serve and how to strike
with power. Not yet completely mastered the overhand
serve but most times it can go over. There is good power
but little speed applied. Its a bit harder to return
but still quite easy.
|
In the mastery level,
the player has completely mastered both the underhand
and overhand. They can serve the overhand with both
good power and speed. The ball is very hard to return
because of the twist added and speed.
|
____
|
The main objective
in this line is the skill "set". A set is used during
the second hit when a setter sets the ball to another
player so that they can spike the ball. The skill will
clearly depict the levels of balance the player has
and how fast their reactions are to the ball.
|
The athlete has not
yet mastered how to set the ball and cannot physically
tell when to set. Their sets may be all over the place
and will make the hitter confused. Also their positioning
mat not be correct. For example, they might be in the
hitter's position during a set.
|
The athlete is slowly
grasping the skill set and can sometimes tell when to
set. They position is also improved and can stay in
the right position during a set. However, their accuracy
of a set still needs a lot of practice and to totally
master the skill.
|
In this level, the
player has completely mastered the skill and is able
to use it whenever necessary. Their position during
the set is always right and can tell where the hitter
wants the ball. However, the elevation may still not
be completely right. For example, when the set is too
high or too low.
|
This is the final phase
to the skill set. In this level, the player is very experienced
with the process and can set perfectly no matter what
situation they are in. For example. If the ball is flying
at him at high speeds. Also, they can analyze the hitter
and can set the exact height that the hitter prefers.
|
____
|
The third skill
mentioned in the rubric is the spike. Spike is one of
the toughest skills to master in terms of volleyball
and has to be done with incredible power and accuracy,as
well as speed. A player must jump high into the air
and hit the ball with their whole body strength.
|
Not yet able to predict
the timing of when to jump and has absolutely no accuracy. The
power is not yet to place as well as speed. The ball
is almost always hit to the net and rarely go through.
Even if it made it through, the power is weak and easy
to return.
|
Now, the player is
able to predict the right timing for jumping and can
present themselves in front the ball at the correct
time. The player is able to get a nice powerful swing
at he power but the accuracy is very bad. For example,
when the ball is flying everywhere around the court
or stadium.
|
The player is not only
able to tell the correct time to jump but also able
to hit with good accuracy. The power is great and most
of the time, the ball will land in the center of the
court. However, the spikes are extremely vulnerable
to blocks and most of the time, the ball is catch- able.
|
In the mastery level.
The athlete will demonstrate immense focus in spiking
and always catches the right time. Their spikes will
have great power, speed, and accuracy. Most of the time
they are not affected by blocks because they can quickly
figure out a new direction for the ball to go. Many
times its not returnable.
|
____
|
The fourth and the
most important skill is the PASS. The reason why passing
is the most important is because it creates opportunities
for spites and good sets. It is the foundation of volleyball
and and what makes a player good. To pass, a player
must demonstrate balance and gentleness.
|
In the beginners level,
the pass is extremely unbalanced and the ball may fly
everywhere. The athlete would not know how much strength
to use thus the ball could hit the root. The receiver
could have a difficult time as well because if the pass
is extremely bad, they would not be able to set or spike
well.
|
In this second phase,
the player is slowly starting to grasp how to pass using
the correct amount of strength but still not perfectly
balanced. For example, the ball is passed towards the
setter but its too high, this way the setter would have
a hard time trying to catch the ball.
|
In this level, the
athlete has grasped all the skills necessary for a good
pass and is working towards perfection. Their passes
are very accurate most of the times but sometimes are
not balanced as well. Most of the time, other players
would not have a hard time receiving the ball but occasionally,
they would.
|
This is the highest
level in terms of passing the ball. Players in this
range have excellent body balance and can give a good
pass no matter what position they are in. They will
be able to tell where other players want the ball to
be and quickly make the decision. In general, people
in this level can apply the exact power, elevation,
and speed to the pass.
|
____
|
The skills for volleyball
performance. Such as set, serve, spike, pass, and block.
This is the general evaluation and is the overall performance
of a athlete in the sport. This last line is the general
level of a player in terms of their strengths and weakness.
|
Not yet able to perform
all the essential techniques. Player has yet met the
basic requirement of the sport. Usually cannot serve
over the net or not being able to pass. In addition,
the athlete may not be able to pass or hit the ball
with efficiency.
|
The athlete has improve
a lot compared to the last level but still needs to
perfect the skills. Some difficult moves such as the
spike and block may not be mastered yet. However, the
player is able to play but just not in competition.
|
All skills in this
sport have been mastered and perfected. The athlete
is eligible to participate in competition and can continue
to train. However the player is not really experienced
and has not played for a certain amount of time.
|
The highest level in
the following sport is mastery. It is meant for people
who have had tons of experience with the sport and can
play good even in high level tournaments. They should
be able to demonstrate superior leadership and can guide
others to success in the sport.
