Understanding of Plot Devices
Plot devices are sometimes used, but are often ineffective at moving the story forward. Connection of plot is awkward.

Understanding of Characterization
Characters are typical and have different roles in the novel. Story is less effective because of cliché characters or missing roles.
Characters are somewhat formulaic, but fit into different roles within the novel. Actions of characters sometimes do not fit.
Multiple characters used effectively to move the story forward. Characters are believable, but not quite lifelike.
Characters are believable and unique, could walk off the page into this classroom. Different character types effectively run the story and bring out interest in other characters and the storyline.

Understanding of Conflict and Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing takes away from the rest of the story. The conflict is a little dry, and not believable.
Conflict is a one-time thing and only somewhat effective; lacks imagination. Foreshadowing shows too little or not enough to be effective.
Conflict is present throughout the story, but seems a little forced in places. Reader can understand the tension, and foreshadowing is used
The tensions rise believably and engagingly within the story. Has the reader at the edge of their seats and artfully shows glimpses of what is to come.

Overall Seamlessness of Picture Book
The story moves somewhat jerkily through the book. Difficult to understand in places. Vocabulary and grammar take away from the story.
At times, elements of the novel seem disconnected or forced. The reader is left unsatisfied with the ending. Vocabulary and grammar are somewhat limiting.
Story moves fairly successfully from one place to another. Student understands how to tie together pieces, but reader is not quite satisfied with the way the ending feels. Appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
Reader doesn't notice changes from point to point within the novel. Language and pictures work together to urge the reader onward, and climax and resolution seem to be the natural outcomes of a well-crafted story.
