Grade "D": Little or no desire to work in public speaking exercises and preparatory work. Shows an "I don't care" attitude.
Grade "C": Student makes minimal effort to work in public speaking exercises and preparatory work. Often needs teacher prodding.
Grade "B": Student shows a desire to work on public speaking exercises and preparatory work and grasps their objectives. Completes assignments and volunteers on a regular basis.
Grade "A": Student volunteers for all public speaking exercises and participates with enthusiasm. Shows originality/creativity in his/her work.

Initiative (Motivation)
Student performs only what is required of the public speaking exercises and only when prodded. Never volunteers to participate.
Student performs public speaking exercises but as a follower rather than as a volunteer. Content to blend in to the rear of the crowd and do enough to get by.
Student performs required public speaking exercises, shows interest in the process and makes his/her points clear.
Student views public speaking exercises from multiple angles, participates with enthusiasm. Shows leadership and makes original speech choices.

Attentiveness (Takes Direction)
Student waits for director to make suggestions on ow to complete the exercise. Uses little or no initiative. Takes an "Easy A" attitude towards the class.
Student listens to direction but waits to follow what classmates do first. Blends into the middle rather than explore what makes good public speaking.
Student responds to direction and establishes relationships with his/her audience in the exercises.
Student eagerly responds to direction due to his/her desire to perform at the highest level. Shows originality and makes choices rather than settling for safe performance.
