Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare
 
2. Content-
Students will create a mock website/newspaper that encapsulates the main themes, and concepts in the play Romeo & Juliet
Themes: love, anger, desperation, youth
Concepts: family bonds, youthful indiscretion, miscommunication
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. The students will identify the central themes of the play.
2. The students will identify parallels to modern life, in the play.
3. Students will create a literary form that reflects comprehension of the play.
 
4. Objectives-
1. The students will identify three major themes and 2 concepts in the play
2. Students will identify and explain 3 contemporary elements in the play.
3. The students will synthesize two major elements of a periodical.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
-Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare, Folger Library Edition
-old Newspapers & magazines
- overhead projector
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. As the students enter the class, they will retrieve 1 copy of a newspaper or magazine
2. Students will be asked to record titles of as many sections, they can identify in their periodical.
3.The class will create a Venn diagram covering the similarities and differences in different types of periodical.
 

B. Development-

1. Sample article titles are printed on the overhead.
2. Sample Headlines are written on the overhead.
3. The differences between titles and headlines is demonstrated.
 

C. Practice-

1. In small groups, students spend 10 minutes brainstorming important words from the text.
2. Students create a "sensational" three word headline.
3.The students create a title for a news article relating to a specific event in the play.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students create a 4 step chronology of an event from the play.
2. Students list three descriptive words that fit the event chosen.
3. Students write a rough outline of a news story from the play
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Students may work in pairs to create a article outline.
2. Students may chose one prevalent descriptive word for their article.
3. Students may create a collage of images to represent a major event in the play.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Students will share article titles.
 

G. Closure-

1. The class discusses the difference between types of periodicals.
2. The class is asked to consider if the type of periodical can effect the presentation of the information.
 
7. Evaluation-
Students will turn-in lists of descriptive words and events.
