6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Bring students attention to the objective.
2.Talk about what is main idea.
3.Discuss why good readers need to know how to determine the main idea of what they are reading.

B. Development-

1. Show pictures of vocabulary words and discuss.
2.Have students preview the selection by looking at the illustrations.
3. Students predict what they might learn about life in the Old West.

C. Practice-

1.Have students identify the main idea of pages 220-221. I will read these pages aloud.
2. Ask what is the main idea and discuss as group.
3. Have students to point out that the main idea is that settlers in the American West wore hats where ever they went.
4. Have students to show evidence (details).

What does the author mean by back home for the settlers? (drawing conclusions)

D. Independent Practice-

1.Students will read pages 222-223.
2. Determine the main idea and details that support their answer.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.During independent practice, Teh high group will read and answer the question. They will also come up with another good question.
2. On level readers will pair up and read together.
3. I will sit with low level readers and read, letting each read a portion of the text. We wil discuss the question together.
4. Students will explain how they support their answer.

F. Checking for understanding-

1. I will walk around and do a quick look to see if students understood the question.
2.We will come together and discuss the question.
3. Assessment is based on my observations.

G. Closure-

1.Bring students attention back to the objective.
2. Once again talk about how using main idea help the reader.
