Introduction to the key concepts regarding the Scientific Method
in 4th grade Science utilizing grade level vocabulary as well as on
level text.

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-

1. Identify tools used within a lab.
2. Acquire new science vocabulary.
3. Read on-level text fluently. |

4. Objectives-
|
1. All students will be able to identify the tools necessary for
scientific inquiry.
2. All students will be able to use appropriate vocabulary when referring
to the tools used.
3. All students will be able to reference on-level material to extrapolate
pertinent information for class. |

5. Materials and Aids-
|
Smart board presentation, text books, tools |
|
|
6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1.Begin on opening page(X), discuss how the girl is using her senses
to explore the underwater world. Ask students how scientists use tools
to explore their world.
2. Direct students to vocabulary list at the bottom of the page.
Discuss any terms that may be familiar.
3. Begin vocabulary activity in Science portfolio. |

B. Development-
1. Read text: Intro Chapter:
Lesson 1.
2. As students read, have them actively looking for vocabulary within
the text.
3. After reading Lesson 1, display tools for inquiry for students
to explore.
Pass around several objects for students to touch and look at close
up. |

C. Practice-
1. Students will work in pairs to identify the tools in the lab
correctly using a worksheet.
2. Students will place their answers in their portfolio to use in
discussion at a later date.

|
D. Independent Practice-
Students will work in independently to identify the tools in the
lab correctly.
|
|
|
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1. IEP and 504 students can work with the Special Education teacher
in a small group setting.
2. Whole brain learning concepts taught to foster acquisition of
material.

F. Checking for understanding-
1. Review using Smart Board technologies.
2. Brief quiz over basic terms.
|
|
|
G. Closure-
1. Discuss how we(or scientists)could use these tools and concepts
to help us perform experiments.
2. Tell students that they will have the opportunity to use these
skills in the next lesson.
3. Preview the experiment in Lesson 2.

|
Students will be proficient when they can identify tools using correct
terminology.
