Multicultural education is basically a rising field of study and discipline that aspires to create equal educational opportunities for all students regardless of their ethnic, racial or social class backgrounds.

Multicultural education was first developed in the US to promote democracy and social equality amongst young people in response to many issues about tension and prejudice. It was introduced in schools to ensure that new teaching practices were able to recognise and understand the cultural backgrounds of every student in order to encourage open-minded attitudes towards different religions and views of the world. Multicultural education progressed partially due to the success of monocultural education, which was introduced to confront extreme racist and sexist issues that existed.

It is estimated that by the year 2020, 46% of students in public school education will be children of color, which serves as clear evidence for the rich diversity that exists within all modern classrooms today. Therefore it was decided that the introduction of multicultural education would help to develop programs that can reflect the diversity of their students.

The basis of multicultural education was developed with the view that by educating young people about a range of cultures and their beliefs, discrimination and prejudice against those from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds as it is widely believed that these .

Its main principles were developed to recognize that not all children come from the same ethnic, religious and social class backgrounds, and try to promote the differences in linguistics and religious beliefs. It has since then advanced to draw from subjects that are sometimes overlooked such as Women's Studies or studying ethnic minorities. This has allowed educators to confront racist and sexist tensions that are still rife throughout the world, and if these skills can be passed on, it would be extremely helpful in fighting racial discrimination.

One of its main aims is to teach all students the skills, knowledge and the correct attitudes that are necessary to function well and efficiently within an independent society such as the one we live in. These skills can also be useful in communicating successfully with people from all walks of life in order to create a civil and caring community.

A major factor of multicultural education is that it rejects all forms of racism and it is completely committed to the elimination of all types of discrimination, including direct and indirect, physical, verbal and mental abuse. Anti-racism based education also focuses on confronting stereotypes such as name-calling and judgmental conclusions people can come to.

Another part of multicultural education is the introduction in primary schools and high schools of teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to teach English in the context of the subjects that students are studying, in order to ensure that they are able to understand the concepts that are taught in English speaking schools.

Publicising the mission, goals and aims of advancing multicultural education can help to overcome possible political barriers that multicultural education may come up against. It can also give all types of educators from across the world a common basis for discussions on furthering education.
